spent last night in newark, nj at the prudential center to see metro station open for miley cyrus. my job takes me to places i never thought i’d be, this was definitely one of those experiences, but i love a good arena pop show. no matter how many times i walk through the innards of an arena, it’s still a rush to walk by boxes labeled “pyro” and see motorcycles that are going to be driven over an audience.

cmj 2009 is over.

i’m recovering from a week of nonstop running around, seeing bands, and hanging out exclusively with people in the music industry.

lessons learned from cmj 2009:

floor toms played by singers are the new synthesizers.
organic energy drinks are the new redbull (i believe there was a mushroom extract energy drink in the green room before a panel i spoke on).
there will always be one person who attends a panel only to speak during the q&a portion, not to ask a question, but to speak to the other attendees as though he was on the panel, and say announce that they’re a “music business professional for the last 40 years” and follow that statement with a rant about how “the internet changed everything…”
bands have simply stopped trying when it comes to naming themselves. really, please look at the list of artists that played this past week.
the recession means that no one is getting good stuff in gift bags. also, gift bags are scarce.

went to see mika at the united palace theater last night and was blown away by his show. an incredibly theatrical experience, the show included multiple costume changes, pupeteers, dancers, blacklight facepaint, and huge balloons.

it was such a visually incredible show i couldn’t put my camera away. my photos, as always, are on flickr.

seriously going to buy tickets to this. who is coming with me?

wine and food weekend

true to her word, perry once again allowed me to be her +1 to many of this weekend’s wine and food festival events. she and father greenspan took me to stuff my face at the blue moon burger bash, daily candy’s midnight munchies, and godiva’s sweet (where for the second year in a row perry and i declared jean georges the best dessert of the evening).

after sampling about six different burgers, i think the best burger was a tie between lure and dumont burger, and the highlight of midnight munchies was definitely the bespoke chocolate table’s truffles. i know the photos aren’t too exciting, i was too busy eating.

…and thus ends 2009’s weekend of gluttony.
